I'm thinking about what to do for Earth Day this year... it is coming up in a couple weeks!
I helped design this LEGO mosaic mural for LEGOLAND California years ago and just noticed it in an old google album. I had to laugh because it is supposed to be a cute, happy decoration for the park and to encourage everyone to step up their eco-game, but it kinda looks like the LEGO is consuming the earth! LOL.
My buddy, Eric Hunter, worked on it too and he gets the photo cred for this one. I know this because those are his shoes in the picture. #notimeforcropping.

LEGOLAND Malaysia is nearing completion as they add the Petronas Towers LEGO model to the Miniland area of the the park. These models were painstakingly designed by Model Designer Eric Hunter, who is actually in this picture (can you find him?). My husband is project managing the operation. I'm so proud of the team out there. Looks like they are doing a great job!
These are the tallest Miniland towers built to date at 9.9976 meters tall.
The park is set to open on September 15, 2012.

And they fit beautifully. We are so ready for the real opening now that we had a practice one and it looked so good... I don't think anyone but us will ever appreciate the planning that was involved in making these monstrouse hotel pieces fit together (except Eric Hunter on this Excalibur corner)... but they'll love it just the same!

Here are a couple pics of some progress on this project. Things are getting really crazy as we add more people to our group. Some of the pieces that are being built are really lovely and the construction site is like our drawing is extruding out of the ground... I'm in bricks and parts up to my eyeballs.

The tree lighting was awesome... Brooke Shields our VIP guest arrived with her two beautiful children... and Lauren Holly with her 3 (4-5 year old) adopted boys.
and do you believe this?!?!? there was a group of about 50 foster children that attended the event - that's right all my spoiled friends, NO parents. The 5 kids in the picture with Brooke and Lauren are a sibling group of 5 FOSTER Kids that are looking for some parents. Maybe we can get the Dave Thomas Foundation (our partner/charity) some exposure and a family or couple can help these guys stay together! Hopefully, I am going to adopt a couple kids some day (soon), maybe I can rescue some siblings from having to be apart in this world... This kills me... I wish I could take the little sweeties home... Hang in there, kids...

The great thing about Eric is that he is truly sincere about this being his dream job - he's not just saying it for marketing, and he cruises thru the workday with a sense of humor; cracking jokes and laughing at himself (see I'm not the only one doing it!)

The Dodgers may be a motley crew, but something "just clicks""If this team wins the World Series, forget Disneyland, it should go to Legoland."

Eric continues Model Shop tradition of wearing the part of the model he was working on.
Our own Eric Hunter has been promoted to the position of Model Designer! Eric was a finalist in the first LEGOLAND Model Builder Search a couple years ago. He had the funniest resume I have ever seen (it was a Rice Crispies box with his face as Snap, Crackle and Pop and all stuff about him on it - so cute!) It was so memorable that when we needed some Model Gluers for Miniland New York Relaunch and the Freedom Tower, Pat DeMaria, our Manager, called him first. He accepted the temporary position. He immediatly became a part of the team with his incredible talent and sense of humor so as soon as a Model Builder position was open, he was hired in full-time!
Congratulations on a much deserved promotion! We all went out and celebrated at Carlsbad Village Pub last night... Cheers to a great member of our team!

I took a pic of this awesome Bricks In Bloom Event flower that someone made at LEGOLAND...
Taylor(Model Shop Resetter - he makes sure the trains and cars keep going in Miniland)and Ryan (Model Shop Animator - he makes the LEGO Models move with magic!) I grabbed them to take a pic in the flower field - how cute!
A Gentleman proposed to a Lady in Miniland... I made a cute "Jen, will you marry me" sign and made them in Minilander... that was so much fun - I hope they get married here, then I'll really be in heaven (I used to be a floral designer and had a specialized events business in LA!)

After being involved with the fast and exciting planning process for the 2006 Model Builder Search, I was so excited for this big day. I started the day out by giving a presentation in the theme park, showing off some of the things I've had a chance to work on while we got this event underway.
Model Builder Search, 2006, has begun right here in Carlsbad, Ca, at the LEGOLAND California theme park. For those of you that don't know me yet, since I just started this blog, I am Kristi Klein, a Legoland Model Designer. 2 Years ago, Legoland held its very first nationwide search for the coveted job of Master Model Builder. Over 600 applicants (and many challenges later!!!) I won! I won an awesome job at Legoland California and an opportunity to be part of a team creating art made out of the most artistic medium I could ever imagine. Now, 2 years later, I am one of a team of 4 Legoland employees going out on the road, searching for the next Model Builder.
Monday was our first day, the BIG Kickoff day for Model Builder Search. The weekend long kickoff event was put together by the wonderful and talented Mercedes Casey, Coordinator for the LLC Events Dept. Complete with awesome cheerleaders, the 5 Model Builders doing presentations on their LEGO artwork and beautiful and creatively talented Danica McKellar from West Wing winning a "Building With the Stars" competition against 2 really cute San Diego Chargers.
Tim Petsche and San Diego Chargers Wide Receiver Kassim Osgood
Eric Hunter and San Diego Chargers Punter Mike Scifres
I was sooo nervous speaking to the guests about my work, but my speech class and Media Training (thanks LLC - for the free training!) really helped me practice public speaking! My colleagues did great also; speaking and helping guests build another Eric Hunter (Model Builder - Photoshop-Whiz) LEGO Mosaic/Mural.
So, after I was done with my part of delivering the LEGO glued trophies fresh out of our Model Shop to the Building with the Stars, (I ate a quick lunch) and met up with media in our Admin Building. I gave them a quick challenge to build a LEGO flower (a creation close to my heart) and then I ran off to.....
WELCOME OUR APPLICANTS:
The LEGOLAND Model Builder Search is a real job search. Our team put the word out on Craigslist.com, Monster, all newspapers etc, to let people know about this exclusive job opening. About 20 amazingly qualified applicants showed up to our hiring event at 3pm Monday afternoon. They each went in and built a pirate themed model in 1 hour with the LEGO bricks provided. Extra points to the applicants that looked like they could be pirates! ARRR! We had a documentary crew doing interviews with a random selection of applicants. All of the models were good, except 1 or 2. I think a couple people cracked under the pressure of the media crews milling around, but that is part of our [my] job to be in a workshop visible to the public visiting Legoland Theme Park. We model builders often give interviews and do events where we have to artistically perform. Some of these applicants emerged from the scrutiny with excellent models. Four of them were selected to compete in the Finals... and whoa... it was hard to decide but
HERE THEY ARE - pics of the 4 finalists and their models:
